''I'm healthy as a horse
Ahh, but everything is spinnin'
And if I use a gun I'm sure to go to prison
I'm stubborn as a mule
and nobody breaks my rules
Ahh, but nothin' comes my way.''
[New Values]

New Values was Iggy Pop's third solo studio album and his first since The Stooges' Fun House without any involvement from David Bowie. Released in 1979, it was Pop's first record for Arista and the first collaboration by Pop and James Williamson since Kill City. The album also reunited Pop and Williamson with multi-instrumentalist Scott Thurston, who had played live piano for The Stooges on Metallic K.O. and Kill City. Although guitar was played by Williamson on "Don't Look Down", Scott Thurston played guitar on all other tracks, with Williamson concentrating on production. Likewise, although one of the songs was written by Pop and Williamson, five tracks were collaborations between Pop and Thurston. Although well received critically and now regarded as one of Pop's best solo efforts, the album was not a commercial success, only reaching number 180 in the Billboard Top 200 album chart. Videos were made for "I'm Bored" and "Five Foot One". [wiki]
After "Lust For Life" and "The Idiot", both of them produced by someone named Bowie, this is the best record by Iggy. He is free, somewhat matured, and enjoys himself. This is a rock'n'roll album. It sounds very low budget and it's exciting. It's direct and it hurts. "New values" is about the important things in life: boredom, the sea and girls. And if anyone has a "political" problem about African Man, she/he might just want to think back to times where we were actually allowed to say the things as we thought them. This is one refreshing record by a guy who went straight against the normal-type rules. Iggy, in "New Values" establishes himself as the Henry Miller of rock: Wild, but tasteful; horny, but self-conscious; eager, but earnest. Everyone with some degree of honesty regarding the disillusions of life should play this album at least once a month. [Amazon customer reviews]

One of my favorite Iggy's solo lp's and probably his best after "Lust For Life" and "The Idiot". Here you got great new wave rockin' tunes as Tell Me A Story, Girls, I'm Bored, Five Foot One, Billy Is A Runaway, New Values, Curiosity and cool ballads, Lou Reed-esque Don't Look Down and Stonesy Angel. Just wanna say...
